Nepal earthquake: More than 8,000 dead, World Heritage crumbled, Everest shaken

     On 25th April, 2015, at 11:56 AM (NST), a massive earthquake of magnitude measure 7.9 struck Nepal. Its epicenter lay in Barpak village, Gorkha District, located north-west of Kathmandu and south of the China border and its hypo-center were at a depth of about 15 km (9.3 mile).

     It shot down more than 8,000 people and wounded more than 17,000. Tremors were felt across the region. The government has announced a state of emergency in the affected countries. More or less fatal accidents have also been reported in the surrounding parts of India, China and Bangladesh as well. It has been the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake which was a 8.4 magnitude earthquake. Continued aftershocks occurred throughout Nepal, with one shock reaching a magnitude of 6.7 on 26 April at 12:54:08 (NST).

AVALANCHES IN MOUNT EVEREST


     The earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 and counting, making it the deadliest day on the mountain in history. It triggered off another huge avalanche in Langtang village, where more than 250+ are missing.











     This iconic Dharhara tower (also known as Bhimsen Tower) turned into debris this Saturday due to earthquake. This white, minaret-like tower which was originally built in 1825/6 AD by the Rana Prime Minister, Bhimsen Thapa, for Queen Lalit as part of the city’s first European-style palace. It was rebuilt with nine storeys, two less than the original building, by then Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher after it was severely damaged in the1934 earthquake which measures 8.4 magnitude.

     Many people found trapped in its ruins. Rescuers, including Nepalese citizens and Nepal rescue team dug through the dust of the collapsed dharhara tower in the capital in order to reach survivors. Over 200 bodies have been recovered from the detritus of two-century old nine-storeys landmark Dharhara tower in the heart of the capital. Many found dead and very few managed to live.

MANY UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES DESTROYED

     A number of centuries-old buildings have been destroyed, including the Basantpur Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square, located in the Kathmandu Valley which was likewise included in UNESCO World Heritage sites.

     Miraculously, the famous 5th century Pashupatinath temple remain  undamaged, while a number of old temples were razed. Several buildings, most of them old, in the densely- populated Kathmandu Valley collapsed, killing hundreds.

     After the earthquake hit, Hundreds of thousands of houses were destroyed rendering people homeless with entire villages flattened, across many territories of the country.Frightened residents came out into the streets. Mobile phones and other communications have been disrupted. Thousands of people prepare to spend the night outside as darkness fell.

MIRACULOUS RESCUES

     About 90 percent of soldiers from the Nepalese Army were sent to the stricken area in the aftermath of the earthquake under Operation Sankat Mochan, with volunteers mobilized from other parts of the country. Rainfall and aftershocks were factors complicating the rescue efforts, with potential secondary effects like additional landslides and further building collapses being concerns. Impassable roads and damaged communications infrastructure posed substantial challenges to rescue efforts. Miracle did happen and we can see its proof in this earthquake rescues. It's been 10 days now, still rescue is finding live people from the debris from different affected areas of Nepal.

     Being Nepal's immediate neighbour, India was the foremost to respond, with Operation Maitri, which provided rescue and backup by its armed forces within hours.      On 26 April 2015, international aid agencies and governments mobilized to respond to the earthquake. Many International Aid Agency/Country who helped Nepal by providing aids, rescue and the promised cash donation during Earthquake 2015 are:

IT'S BEEN 16 DAYS NOW, NEPALESE PEOPLE HAVE FELT MORE THAN 150 AFTERSHOCKS WHICH MEASURES 4 MAGNITUDE AND ABOVE. MORE THAN 8,000 PEOPLE DIED, MORE THAN 17,000 PEOPLE INJURED.
